Retiree reporting update

Legislation that took effect January 1, 2019, changed the laws governing NHRS retirees working in a part-time position for retirement system participating employers.

Included in the new law was a “grandfathering” provision that allows retirees who were working part-time for NHRS-participating employers on the effective date of the law to work a maximum of 1,664 hours per calendar year for as long as they remain with the employer in the position they held on the effective date.

Employers were required by law to provide the names and position titles of retirees in their employment to NHRS no later than February 15, 2019. While the bulk of this reporting was done through the retiree reporting module of the NHRS Data Reporting System (DRS), some employers also submitted spreadsheets containing the required retiree information. All employer-submitted spreadsheets have now been loaded onto the DRS by the retirement system.

Employers are encouraged to log into the DRS to review the list of their grandfathered retirees. Employers who wish to report an error or omission should email Tamre McCrea, employer audit manager, at [email protected].

NHRS is currently developing an online format for the annual retiree reporting, which will be due between Jan. 1-Feb. 15, 2020. The retirement system will provide instructions and support to employers prior to the start of the new reporting requirement.
